Riddick is a handsome 4-year-old Rottweiler with a big personality, an affectionate side and, once he knows he is safe with you, a real love of being close to his people. Sadly, Riddick hasn’t always had reason to trust humans. He came into rescue after being seized by Veterinary Services, having reportedly been mistreated and left without enough food. Understandably, those experiences have left their mark. When Riddick first meets someone new he can be wary and guarded, particularly around men. He needs people who understand that his trust has to be earned rather than expected. Give him the time and space to work you out, approach him calmly and let him decide when he is ready, and a very different dog begins to appear. With the people he trusts, Riddick is affectionate, playful and loves human company. As you can see from his photos, once you have made it into his trusted circle, this big lad is quite happy getting as close to you as physically possible! He is food motivated, enjoys playing with toys and already has some great foundations for life in a home. He walks well on the lead, travels well in the car, is house trained and crate trained, and knows some commands. Riddick is also good with other dogs and could potentially share his home with a suitable canine companion following successful introductions. He cannot live with cats. Because of his history and the time he needs to build trust, we are looking for an experienced, patient adopter who will allow the relationship to develop at Riddick’s pace. We would particularly want any men in the household to understand that he may need more time with them initially. His suitability with children has not yet been established, so we would not place him into a home with young children without further assessment. Riddick is Leishmania positive and has received treatment. This will be discussed fully with anyone interested in adopting him so that they understand his ongoing needs. Riddick doesn’t need someone to feel sorry for him. He needs someone prepared to understand him. Someone who won’t rush those first introductions, who will give him consistency and security, and who will let him discover that he doesn’t need to protect himself anymore. For the right person, we think the reward will be a deeply affectionate, loyal companion who has finally found somewhere he can completely relax and call home.
