All about this dog…
Choco
Choco is an incredibly sensitive dog who is slowly learning that humans can be safe. When she arrived at the shelter, she was extremely fearful and shut down, clearly carrying the weight of serious trauma from her past. She does not allow physical contact yet — even a hand, especially when raised, can frighten her — strongly suggesting she may have suffered abuse. For Choco, rebuilding trust in people is a gradual and deeply emotional journey. Despite her fears, Choco is food-motivated and has already begun to take small but meaningful steps forward. She may come closer for treats, gently ask with her paw, or even stand on a person to reach food. These moments reveal her strong desire to connect. Physical touch, however, remains overwhelming for her, so patience, gentle encouragement, and respecting her boundaries are absolutely essential. Choco has been diagnosed with leishmaniasis, but this does not affect her quality of life. Her condition is easily managed with a single daily tablet, and she can enjoy a normal, happy life with proper care. Because of her fear and sensitivity, Choco cannot safely wear a leash yet, which means she cannot go for regular walks at the shelter. She can, however, be gently encouraged with treats to walk to a large enclosure, where she enjoys some quiet time and freedom to explore safely. It is heartbreaking for volunteers that she cannot experience the simple joys most dogs love — sniffing the grass, exploring the outdoors, and enjoying the everyday wonders of life. Choco needs a calm, stable home with a patient and understanding person — ideally someone with experience fostering or adopting sensitive dogs. Her future human must respect her boundaries and allow her to progress at her own pace. In a home environment, where she feels truly safe, Choco will finally have the chance to heal, build trust, and overcome the trauma she has endured — something extremely difficult to achieve within the stressful shelter setting. With time, love, and the right environment, Choco has the potential to learn trust again, feel secure, and form a deep, lasting bond with a person who truly understands her gentle heart. She is a dog with incredible courage hidden beneath her fear, and the right person can help her flourish. She is currently in Cyprus looking for a home in UK. She will be neutered, vaccinated, chipped, treated for parasites, have her own pet passport and rescue back up from Saving Souls Animal Rescue.
